AROMATHERAPY FOR STRESS, DEPRESSION, NERVOUS TENSION

A typical way to deal with stress and depression is by receiving sedatives. However, these medications are sometimes dangerous because they affect brain function and may even be addictive. Aromatherapy offers safer ways to get rid of nervous tension. Applying soothing essential oils, you will be able to cope with stress, depression, insomnia, overcome anxiety, sadness, despair, gain self-confidence and trust your own strength.

Essential oils work differently because they contain ingredients that are both soothing and stimulating. In fact, the researchers found that, depending on a person’s condition, essential oils can be either stimulating or soothing. Essential oils have a unique ability to adapt to the needs of a certain person – no medical drug has such an ability. In aromatherapy, these oils are called “adaptogens.”

Top soothing essential oils: bergamot, cedar, chamomile, frankincense, geranium, lavender, patchouli, valerian, lemon balm, sage, neroli, vetiver, basil, jasmine.

This is not a complete list of soothing essential oils, you can also use several citrus oils such as lemon, grapefruit and tangerine, as they also have a calming effect.

Bergamot essential oil can be used in combination with other calming oils such as chamomile, cypress, eucalyptus, geranium, jasmine, juniper, lavender, lemon, palmarosa, patchouli and ylang-ylang.

Safety: bergamot essential oil increases the skin’s sensitivity to direct sunlight. Therefore, apply this oil on the skin 24 hours before sun exposure.


Cedar Essential Oil is known for its soothing properties. Because of clinical trials, the scientists found that the essential oil of cedar is especially useful for hyperactive children. Cedar oil stimulates the limbic area of the brain (emotion center) and of the pineal gland, which produces melatonin (melatonin plays an important role in sleep cycles). Cedar oil can be used for both inhalation and outward in the back of the head.

Essential oil of cedar is combined with such essential oils: bergamot, clary sage, cypress, eucalyptus, flower oils, juniper, frankincense, myrrh, rosemary.

Safety: Use with caution during pregnancy.


Chamomile essential oil can dispel anger, clear the mind and bring stability to their emotions. Chamomile essential oil can be used for inhalation using aroma necklace and oil burner, as well as for massages, baths.

Chamomile essential oil blends well with essential oils withfir, geranium, helichrysum, hyssop, lavender, lemongrass, oregano, sandalwood, mint.

Safety: not recommended during the first 4-5 months of pregnancy. It can irritate sensitive skin.


Frankincense essential oil calms the nervous system, clears the mind. Oil incense can reduce the feelings of anxiety, fear, distrust, chronic fatigue, lack of vitality, and eliminate intrusive thoughts about past events. Not surprisingly, frankincense essential oil has been used since ancient times for meditation and prayer.

Frankincense essential oil blends well with essential oils of sandalwood, sage, lavender, myrrh, pine, orange, bergamot and lemon.


Geranium essential oil helps to relieve stress, get rid of stress, anxiety, depression, negative memories. Oil faces also increases inspiration and optimism.

Geranium essential oil blends well with rose, sage, lavender, bergamot, patchouli.

Safety: apply no earlier than 24 hours before sun exposure.


Lavender essential oil is a well-known antidepressant. This lavender essential oil helps to get rid of stress and its consequences such as anxiety, insomnia, heart palpitations, migraines, high blood pressure.

Lavender essential oil blends well with all essential oils.


Patchouli essential oil helps to combat depression, apathy, anxiety, balance emotions and increase intuition and imagination. Patchouli oil in small quantities acts as a stimulant, providing a burst of energy, cheerfulness and optimism.

In large quantities, patchouli essential oil acts as a sedative, soothing nervous system.

Patchouli essential oil blends well with ylang-ylang, lemon, neroli, rose.


Valerian essential oil is used to treat anxiety, insomnia, indigestion, migraine and nervous tension.

The essential oil of valerian may be mixed with lavender, pine and patchouli.


Sage essential oil is useful to relieve depression and anxiety symptoms, such as anxiety and insomnia.


Mandarin essential oil is relaxing, calming and has sedative properties, thus helping to reduce irritation in adults and hyperactivity in children.

Essential oil of mandarin blends well with jasmine, neroli, cypress, rosewood, basil, coriander, lavender, marjoram, palmarosa, chamomile, black pepper and all citrus.


Melissa essential oil is used in aromatherapy to suppress nervousness, tension, stress, insomnia and as an antidepressant, sedative, hypnotic. This helps to lower high blood pressure, calm the mind and to stabilize the cardiovascular system.

This essential oil blends well with lavender, neroli, rose, Roman chamomile, bergamot, cedar, geranium, jasmine, lemon, marjoram, ylang ylang.


Neroli essential oil improves mood, reduces depression, stress and tension.

Neroli essential oil is very well combined with chamomile, coriander, geranium, lemon, ylang-ylang, lavender, jasmine, sage, sandalwood and bergamot.


Vetiver Essential oil stabilizes emotions, calms overactive mind, fights insomnia and increases self-confidence. Vetiver helps to cope with stress and recover from emotional trauma and shock.

Vetiver oil blends well with bergamot, cedar, sage, geranium, ginger, grapefruit, jasmine, lavender, lemon, mandarin, patchouli, rose, ylang-ylang.


Basil Essential oil is refreshing and stimulating, it is recommended to relieve mental exhaustion. Oil of basil is indicated for anxiety, depression, irritability, mental fatigue, migraine.

Basil Essential Oil blends well with lavender, bergamot, clary sage, lime, hyssop, sandalwood, neroli, marjoram.


Jasmine essential oils have a calming effect on the nervous system, it helps to get rid of the fear of feelings of anxiety, increases self-confidence, relieves headaches and insomnia.

Jasmine essential oil blends well with bergamot, cypress, sandalwood, lavender, rose, ylang-ylang and neroli.
